What Is Med Tech?
Medical Technology (Med Tech) is a program appropriate for any student interested in pursuing a medical career. This class will help prepare the student for an entry-level position in a health care facility and will help broaden their knowledge to allow them to excel in post-secondary education related to any medically-oriented career.
Certification for Students
Students enrolled in Med Tech will earn certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens. Students who select the Nurse Aide clinical experience option in Med Tech III will be eligible to take the State of Ohio Nurse Aide Test to become an STNA (State-tested Nurse Aide).
Med Tech I
One credit
Medical Technology I provides students with an overview of the opportunities available in the healthcare industry. Students will learn about the healthcare system, qualities of a healthcare worker, and health promotion. Students in Med Tech 1 will become certified in Bloodborne Pathogens.
Med Tech II
One credit
In Medical Technology II students will apply knowledge and clinical skills necessary to care for patients in a variety of healthcare settings. Students in Med Tech II will learn to take vital signs, and become certified in First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for Healthcare Providers.
Med Tech III
Three credits
Medical Technology III focuses on patient centered care and medical terminology. Students in Med Tech III will gain clinical experience and complete a one-semester internship ideal for any student wishing to pursue further training in Allied Health or Nursing.
Options include, but are not limited to:
Nurse Aide - MTIII includes a state-approved TCEP (Training, Competency and Evaluation Program) class for Nurse Aides, complete with on-site clinical training in a local extended care facility.
Dental Assistant/Medical Office Assistant: Students will be assigned on-site mentoring at an appropriate related health care facility, followed by an internship in their selected career field.
Physical Therapy/Occupational Therapy: Students choosing this option will complete special shadowing rotations followed by an internship that will earn her/him volunteer hours often required prior to advancement to the next level of education in their chosen field.
Note: Students will not attend a formal class second semester. Instead, they will work a minimum of 15 hours per week at a related internship. Transportation is necessary.
