PRODUCING THE FUTURE OF JOURNALISM THROUGH THE VIKING VIEWS
The Viking Views is a student-produced newspaper distributed seven times throughout the year to approximately 1,800 students and staff, the community, and online. The brainstorming, story assignments, photo opportunities, interviewing, writing, editing, design layout, and distribution is completely student-run, and students are assigned jobs that they hold for one academic year. The Viking Views showcases what it means to be a journalist in the 21st century.
Both the Newspaper Production and Newspaper Production Honors programs display true student leadership and ownership as well as the opportunity to utilize principles and guidelines learned in Journalism I. Students have opportunities in Newspaper Production to join the internationally known Quill and Scroll Society, which includes scholarship opportunities for student journalists, as well as attend the annual Ohio Scholastic Media Association (OSMA) convention at Kent State University in the spring. This event displays, critiques, and ranks writing, photography, design, and overall student-run publications from all over the state.
Since 2008, The Viking Views has received three All-Ohio rankings (the highest award at the convention), two First Place rankings, and two Second Place rankings.
