What Is Medical Technology?
Medical Technology (Med Tech) is a program appropriate for any student interested in pursuing a medical career. This class will help prepare the student for an entry-level position in a health care facility and will help broaden their knowledge to allow them to excel in post-secondary education related to any medically-oriented career.


MED TECH I
· Health and Science Technology
This introductory course provides an overview of career opportunities within the healthcare industry. Students learn fundamental skills in safe and effective patient care, health promotion, and therapeutic interventions. The course also introduces biomedical research and health information management. Students will earn certification in Bloodborne Pathogens.
1 Period / 1 Credit Course
Offered to 10-11 grade students 



MED TECH II
· Principles of Allied Health 
Students apply clinical knowledge and skills to provide patient care across a variety of healthcare settings. The course emphasizes regulatory compliance, patient safety, pathophysiology, and medical interventions while developing essential hands-on skills to support basic human needs. Students will earn certifications in Healthcare Provider CPR and First Aid.
1 Period / 1 Credit Course
Offered to 10-11 grade students 
Prerequisite: Anatomy & Physiology


 

MED TECH III – consists of 3 classes
· Medical Terminology
This course focuses on building a strong medical vocabulary through the study of word structure, meaning, and pronunciation. Students will learn to apply rules for constructing and interpreting medical terms, abbreviations, and symbols related to anatomy, physiology, and pathology. The course also includes practice in reading and translating medical records and documents.

Offered to 10-11 grade students 
Prerequisite: Med Tech ll and Anatomy & Physiology
· Patient Centered Care

Students develop and apply nursing assistant skills to support patients in meeting basic human needs. The course emphasizes implementing care plans, monitoring patient conditions, and maintaining accurate documentation. Through participation in a state-approved Training, Competency, and Evaluation Program (TCEP) and clinical experience at an extended care facility, students become eligible to take the state nurse aide exam to earn STNA certification and placement on the Ohio Nurse Aide Registry.

Offered to 10-11 grade students 
Prerequisite: Med Tech ll and Anatomy & Physiology
· Health Science Capstone
Note: Students will not attend a formal class second semester. Instead, they will work a minimum of 15 hours per week at a related internship. Transportation is necessary.

This course provides students with real-world experience in the Health Science field through employment or internship opportunities. Students work a minimum of 15 hours per week in a healthcare setting. 
Options include, but are not limited to:

  1. Nurse Aide - MTIII includes a state-approved TCEP (Training, Competency and Evaluation Program) class for Nurse Aides, complete with on-site clinical training in a local extended care facility. 
  2. Dental Assistant/Medical Office Assistant: Students will be assigned on-site mentoring at an appropriate related health care facility, followed by an internship in their selected career field.
  3. Physical Therapy/Occupational Therapy: Students choosing this option will complete special shadowing rotations followed by an internship that will earn her/him volunteer hours often required prior to advancement to the next level of education in their chosen field.

Prerequisite: Med Tech ll and Anatomy & Physiology
 



Certification for Students
Students enrolled in Med Tech will earn certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens. Students who select the Nurse Aide clinical experience option in Med Tech III will be eligible to take the State of Ohio Nurse Aide Test to become an STNA (State-tested Nurse Aide).
